    The researchers of the Smart City Institute work on the development of a scientific expertise – with an international perspective and impact – on the management of smart cities.

    A series of scientific research projects (fundamental research and applied research) are in progress. The partners of the SCI as well as other public and private organizations support these research projects.

They can also have as goals to bring methods or tools that aim at intervene on social inclusion devices into play. Those intervention forms aim at analyze, transform, support the various devices which promote social inclusion or which move towards new forms of social inclusion. Different types of researches are so possible in the direction of social inclusion: nomothetic research, exploratory research, applied research and research-action.

    The BEAMS Energy Research group uses digital signal processing of electrical signals measured in electrical power devices or systems for different applications including protection, monitoring, control and security evaluation.

    Typical applications are : protection relaying, fault location, power system event analysis, wide area monitoring and protection using PMUs, ECA Energy Consumption Advisor, security against voltage collapse, interarea oscillations, cascading events leading to blackout.

    The laboratory implemented a web site provided with simulation tools for dynamic simulation (http://sisal.provincedeliege.be/). Building Dynamic Simulation tools were used in order to assess the flexibility of different building types equipped with heat pumps, in the Belgian context (concrete structure, radiators or heating floor). Different regulation strategies were tested including intermittent heating, continuous heating, variable set point.

    One research activity of the telecom department is dedicated to the simulation, design and metrology of smart grid communication architectures. In this frame, a particular emphasis is put on field quality PHY layer metrology of low and medium voltage powerline communications using G3-PLC communication standards. Moreover, protocol analysis and performance evaluation of the protocol layers are made.
